Witchbitch is a chilling modern horror story that blends psychological dread with supernatural terror, set against the eerie backdrop of rural Turkey. Yaren, a devoted schoolteacher, prepares to marry her fiancé Burak when her closest friend, Aysel, mysteriously vanishes without a trace. Unbeknownst to Yaren, Burak carries a dark secret--he played a role in Aysel's death. Soon after, financial ruin forces the newlyweds to move into a small, aging house on the outskirts of town, where Yaren's life begins to unravel in ways she can neither explain nor escape.
Strange occurrences grow more frequent--objects move on their own, shadows seem to breathe, and whispers haunt the silence of their modest home. As Yaren's grip on reality begins to slip, the couple's already strained relationship deteriorates under the weight of guilt, fear, and paranoia. Each night brings fresh terror, and the boundaries between the living and the dead begin to dissolve. What emerges is a deadly curse tied to betrayal, jealousy, and the unquiet spirit of the wronged Aysel.
Director Anastasiya Budakva crafts Witchbitch as a slow-burning descent into madness, weaving themes of guilt, love, and supernatural vengeance into a story that feels both intimate and mythic. The performances by Selin Acar and Mesut Albayrak are raw and unsettling, grounding the film's otherworldly horror in emotional realism. With its stark cinematography and atmospheric sound design, the film evokes a sense of dread that lingers long after the final frame.
A must-see for fans of international and independent horror, Witchbitch stands alongside modern genre touchstones like The Babadook and The Wailing--a haunting tale of secrets that refuse to stay buried and a curse that demands its due.
