In a brightly lit art gallery in Rome, the American Sam Dalmas observes an eerie scene: a person in a black raincoat and black gloves, a flashing knife, a helpless, blood-stained woman. Sam cannot help because a large pane of glass prevents him from doing so. The American, however, manages to scare the man in the coat away. The young woman survives. Apparently the perpetrator was a wanted serial killer. Because the police himself seem to suspect Sam, he tries to investigate the case. In doing so, he puts his own life in danger...

Previously cut scenes from the main film are shown in the uncut version in Italian with optional German subtitles!

Dario Argento's directorial debut was praised by critics, and even Alfred Hitchcock paid respect to the young Italian. The film, starring Tony Musante, Eva Renzi, Werner Peters and Mario Adorf, is an early Argento masterpiece and a flawless giallo - a foretaste of later highlights in the director's work. The elegant, eerie thriller is enhanced by a wonderful soundtrack by Oscar® winner Ennio Morricone. In Germany, the film was marketed as a Bryan Edgar Wallace crime thriller, but in fact it borrows heavily from the novel The Screaming Mimi by Frederic Brown.
