An Intense Psychological Vision of the Future
Directed by Hiroki Yamaguchi
Starring Luchino Fukisaki, Yoshiichi Kawada, Ryôsuke Koshiba
Set almost entirely inside a transport elevator that shuttles citizens between vertically stacked futuristic towns, a tense and unsettling scenario unfolds. Among the crowded passengers are corporate workers glued to their phones, unusual urban dwellers, militant law enforcers, and a 17-year-old schoolgirl with the psychic ability to glimpse fragments of other passengers’ thoughts.
Paranoia escalates when two dangerous criminals are brought aboard under police supervision and tensions within the confined space begin to spiral. Claustrophobic production design and a gallery of eccentric characters build toward a chaotic and psychologically charged confrontation in this dystopian sci-fi thriller.
The brainchild of director Hiroki Yamaguchi, who completed the film at just 23 years old before it became a standout at the 2004 Fantasia Film Festival, Hellevator: The Bottled Fools makes its worldwide Blu-ray debut in a newly graded master in this special edition.
