MARTYRS

A rare film whose reputation speaks for itself, Martyrs is widely regarded as one of the defining works of the New French Extremity movement and director Pascal Laugier’s most celebrated film. Disturbing and thought-provoking in equal measure, it is a philosophical and deeply challenging work of modern horror cinema.

In 1971, a young girl named Lucie Jurin (Jessie Pham) escapes from a mysterious facility where she had been held captive. Placed in an orphanage, she forms a close bond with another girl, Anna (Erika Scott), who helps her cope with the trauma of her past.

Fifteen years later, Lucie (Mylène Jampanoï) tracks down the family she believes was connected to her childhood captivity. After confronting them, she calls Anna (Morjana Alaoui) for help. But when Anna arrives at the isolated Belford house, she soon discovers that far more unsettling secrets lie hidden within its walls.

Featuring powerful performances from its two leads and unforgettable imagery, Martyrs has become one of the most discussed horror films of the twenty-first century. The Masters of Cinema Series presents the film on 4K UHD for the first time anywhere in the world, newly restored from the original camera negative and accompanied by a wide range of special features.
