At just 11 years old, Dade Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller) impressed the hacker scene with a cyberattack that crippled Wall Street. Seven years later, he hacks under his new alias Crash Override and finds talented like-minded individuals at college – including the attractive classmate Kate (Angelina Jolie), aka Acid Burn, and Emmanuel (Matthew Lillard), aka Cereal Killer. When Joey (Jesse Bradford), the youngest member of the group, accidentally stumbles upon a virus during a hack that is intended to attack the systems of an oil company, the computer specialists find themselves up against the ruthless security chief and former hacker Eugene "The Plague" Belford (Fisher Stevens), who is trying to cover up a multi-million dollar crime with a computer worm. To deflect suspicion from himself, he frames the young hackers for the scheme, forcing them to use all their programming skills to stop the criminal.
