Breaking up for summer vacation, popular literature teacher Don Luis wishes his students well and assigns them a holiday project about the myth of “delayed revenge.” Later, while leaving the city, Don Luis encounters two of his students, Miguel and Julia, hitchhiking. He offers them a ride, and they eventually agree to spend the night at his isolated countryside home, which they soon discover is a sprawling mansion surrounded by extensive private grounds.
The young couple spend the evening together and begin discussing the possibility of remaining at the large estate, whose only other resident appears to be Jaime (Simon Andreu), a man in his thirties who serves Don Luis in a mysterious role. The following day, Miguel and Julia attempt to leave the property, only to discover that the tall iron gates are chained shut. When they confront Don Luis, he reveals a pistol, and the pair realize they are now trapped inside the estate along with Jaime.
What follows is a series of unsettling psychological challenges seemingly designed to break their resistance and force them to submit to Don Luis’s authority. However, when Don Luis eventually returns to his teaching duties, Miguel, Julia, and Jaime begin to see an opportunity to change the balance of power. As tensions grow inside the mansion, the situation escalates into a dangerous struggle for control.
The film caused controversy upon its original release, widely interpreted as a commentary on the fascist dictatorship of General Franco, and was subjected to 42 censorship cuts. This edition presents the film fully restored and uncut from the original negative, offering audiences the first English-friendly release of this striking and provocative work.
