SOME PEOPLE WOULD KILL FOR COMPANY

In the early 21st century, as European art and horror cinema explored darker psychological territory, Calvaire emerged as one of the most striking entries. The debut feature from Belgian director Fabrice Du Welz signaled the arrival of a bold new voice in genre filmmaking.

Travelling cabaret singer Marc Stevens (Laurent Lucas) becomes stranded in a remote mountain region of France when his van breaks down. He is taken in by local innkeeper Mr. Bartel (Jackie Berroyer), who offers him shelter and assistance. But Bartel is emotionally fragile, and Marc’s presence stirs unresolved memories of his past. As tensions rise and Marc’s attempts to leave are obstructed, the situation spirals into a disturbing psychological ordeal.

Darkly comic and deeply unsettling, Calvaire drew comparisons to Deliverance and Straw Dogs upon release. It remains a gripping and uncompromising thriller.
