While visiting a flea market, little Em (Natasha Calis) buys an antique box. The girl is thrilled with her new "treasure." Her parents, Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenck (Kyra Sedgwick), initially pay little attention to her new obsession until Em begins behaving strangely and becoming increasingly aggressive. While investigating the mysterious box, Clyde stumbles upon an ancient Jewish folklore belief that a dybbuk is supposedly trapped inside the box—a spirit of the dead that feeds on the souls of the living. There is no danger as long as the dybbuk remains trapped in its box. But Em has opened the lid and like a parasite, the devilish inmate has already bored deep into its innocent host organism...
