Set in a 16th-century Neapolitan convent (Sant'Arcangelo), the story follows the power-hungry Sister Julia (Anne Heywood) as she viciously schemes to usurp the dying Mother Superior. As Julia stops at nothing to seize control, the convent descends into a web of political corruption, illicit heterosexual affairs, and lesbian relationships among the inmates. The situation escalates into a brutal church inquisition characterized by torture and degradation.
