THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE / THE ADVENTURES OF ZORRO
Presented in partnership with Something Weird Video.
From nudie films to regional exploitation oddities, the independent exploitation scene welcomed filmmakers working in nearly any genre so long as they pushed the boundaries of what could be shown on screen. DISTRIBPIX, one of the most recognizable names associated with this era of filmmaking, now brings selections from its extensive library to Blu-ray, highlighting unusual and hard-to-see films from across the exploitation landscape.
Legendary producer David F. Friedman, often called the “Mighty Monarch of Exploitation,” built a career creating bold and controversial independent films. In this first entry celebrating his work, Something Weird and Distribpix present two of his most notorious productions, both newly restored in 4K from their original 35mm camera negatives and appearing on Blu-ray for the first time.
In THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE, Dr. Charles Leeder discovers the diary of the legendary Dr. Henry Jekyll hidden away in an antiques shop. Believing the journal holds the key to advancing his own experiments, he steals it and begins testing the transformation formula for himself. Soon he discovers the ability to transform into the mysterious and seductive “Miss Hide,” whose alter ego brings chaos and danger wherever she appears. As a detective begins investigating a series of suspicious crimes, Miss Hide must go to greater lengths to avoid exposure.
Directed by Lee Raymond and produced by Friedman collaborator Byron Mabe (She Freak), the film stars Rene Bond (Fugitive Girls), Jennifer Brooks (Working Girls), and Jane Tsentas (Evil Come Evil Go), offering an unusual twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story.
In THE ADVENTURES OF ZORRO, a peaceful Mexican village suffers under the control of the ruthless General Esteban and his assistant Sgt. Felipio Latio, who impose heavy taxes and rule the region through intimidation. Hoping to restore justice, Don Manuel calls for his son Don Diego to return from Spain. By day, Diego appears harmless and carefree, but by night he dons the mask and cape of the mysterious Zorro, secretly working to defeat the corrupt authorities while protecting the people of the village.
Produced during the final years of the drive-in era and directed by Col. Robert Freeman (Bare Knuckles), this colorful period adventure features performances by Jacqueline Giroux (To Live & Die in LA), Starlyn Simone (A Climax of Blue Power), John Alderman (Little Miss Innocence), and exploitation icon Bob Cresse (The Scavengers).
