Joe Gillis (William Holden) is a bankrupt, struggling screenwriter in Hollywood who tries to escape repo men for his car. When his car tire blows out, he accidentally pulls into the driveway of a decaying, gothic mansion owned by Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), a wealthy and deeply delusional former silent-film queen. Mistaking Joe for an undertaker for her pet chimpanzee, Norma ropes him into editing her unproduceable, self-penned script for Salome. What starts as a financial arrangement quickly turns into a suffocating trap as Joe becomes a virtual prisoner in her mansion, leading to fatal obsession.
