Girls (1980)
From influential director Just Jaeckin (Emmanuelle), Girls is a long-unseen coming-of-age cult film from 1980 featuring a young Anne Parillaud (La Femme Nikita).
Set against the vibrant nightlife of early 1980s France, the story follows three close friends—Suzanne (Charlotte Walior), Annie (Zoé Chauveau), and Catherine (Anne Parillaud)—who spend their evenings exploring discos, cinemas, and the excitement of youth while searching for love, independence, and their place in the world. Tagging along is Suzanne’s younger sister Betty (Isabelle Mejias), whose attempts to keep up with the older girls soon lead her into situations she may not be ready to face.
Director Just Jaeckin, known for his distinctive visual style and character-driven storytelling, transforms what could have been a simple teen story into a reflective portrait of friendship, growing up, and the uncertain transition from adolescence into adulthood. Through quiet moments and fleeting encounters, the film captures the emotions and experiences of youth, supported by an evocative soundtrack from Eric Stewart (10cc).
Presented by Cult Epics in a new 4K restoration from the original negative, this Blu-ray edition brings Girls to audiences in its most complete and visually striking form yet. Special features include an audio commentary by Jeremy Richey, the essay Who Is Just Jaeckin?, Jaeckin’s final filmed interview from 2022, a new conversation with actress Isabelle Mejias, and archival television footage featuring Jaeckin and the cast. The release also includes Girls: The German Cut and the film’s original theatrical trailers.
Often compared to films like Little Darlings and Foxes, Girls remains a memorable European coming-of-age drama centered on friendship, self-discovery, and the search for identity.
