Faye Dunaway stars as Lena Doyle, an independent, strong-willed woman ("wildcatter") who owns a small plot of land featuring a single oil derrick. She fiercely resists intimidation and pressure from a massive, ruthless oil conglomerate—led by a cold executive played by Jack Palance—that wants to seize her well by any means necessary. Lena’s estranged, no-good father, Cleon (John Mills), arrives to help, though she initially rejects him. Cleon secretly hires a rugged, down-and-out drifter named Mase (George C. Scott) to protect Lena and the rig from the competing company.
