The Japanese company Nikkatsu is known for its “roman poruno” films, a line of adult-oriented films that began production in 1971. They made a total of over 1,000 films in the genre between 1971 and 1988.
During the early 70s, the reputation of “Swedish Sin” spread throughout the world, and the daring Swedish films became extremely popular in Japan. Sweden is a small country and could not produce enough films to satisfy the Japanese market.
Nikkatsu traveled to Sweden with its own directors, producers, screenwriters and team and shot six films between 1971 and 1973. The Swedish actors had to act out Japanese perceptions about Sweden and Swedish culture.
Klubb Super 8 is now releasing all six films on Blu-ray in Scandinavia, newly restored by Nikkatsu from the original negatives, and with lots of special features.
The films have never been shown outside of Japan before.

House of the Beast / Bockens hus / Inju no yado (1973)
Three escaped convicts rob a gun shop in Stockholm before heading into the countryside, where one of them has hidden a stash of money. They seek refuge in an old manor and take the owners hostage. But the family that lives there proves to be both bizarre and depraved. Soon, everyone is entangled with everyone else, until all boundaries collapse and it becomes unclear who truly holds power inside the manor.

Drops of Honey / Droppar av honung / Mitsu no shitatari (1973)
The atmospheric, tragic and melodramatic story of an ice hockey player who becomes obsessed with a mysterious red-haired woman with a dark secret.
The hockey player Allan has problems with his distant wife. After a match, he becomes drawn to the mysterious Eva. After a night together, they are separated. Allan eventually ends up at a nightclub, where his wife is with his best friend. Eva performs on stage, wearing only a pair of enormous swan wings. Allan is enchanted by Eva and begins to desperately search for her.
This is Nikkatsu's profound "Bergman film", with several Ingmar Bergman-like tropes.

Desire First Experience / Oskuldens ĂĄtrĂĄ / Yokujo shotaiken (1971)
Young Nicole is reading a novel written by her uncle Rune. The story follows Annika, a university student whose life changes after a traumatic encounter with two bikers. This experience leads her into a period of personal exploration and emotional conflict. As Nicole becomes absorbed in Annika’s story, she too begins to change.
The film mixes dreamlike sequences with free-form jazz, experimental visuals, and lounge-style covers of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid and The Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby.

Forest of Beastly Desire / Det djuriska begärets skog / Juyoku no mori (1971)
The gradual downfall and eventual demise of the beautiful but troubled Mamy.
Mamy is in love with the artist André, who will pursue his career abroad, but promises to return. In his absence, Mamy enters an unhappy marriage with the lawyer Bertrand. Bertrand’s friend Michel begins making advances toward her, while Michel’s wife grows close to Bertrand. Eventually, Mamy becomes entangled in a complicated situation but remains unable to forget André.

Agony of the Shadow Beast / Odjurets smärtsamma njutning / Inju no modae (1971)
A young woman is approached by her boyfriend outdoors, but their encounter is violently interrupted by a stranger who attacks them. The boyfriend runs away, and she is assaulted. Disoriented, she staggers into the road, where she is saved by the charismatic C Bronson and his chauffeur. When she wakes up, she finds herself held captive by Bronson, who is running an illegal operation.
In his mansion, women perform to music as guests look on. Gradually, Bronson manipulates the young woman into becoming part of his operation. In a cruel twist, her ex-boyfriend eventually resurfaces and is humiliated.

Blonde Animal / Det blonda djuret / Kinpatsu animaru (1971)
A young loving couple falls prey to an older husband and wife vacationing in Stockholm in search of excitement. The characters spend much of their time strolling through the city, taking in its famous sights, going to discos — or engaging in intimate encounters, often still in their underwear, yet appearing to enjoy themselves to the fullest. An interesting case of Japanese censorship.
