Leonard Shelby cannot form new memories after suffering a severe head trauma during the assault that led to his wife's murder. To cope, he documents clues on his body and instant photos, tracking down suspects while crossing paths with a suspicious barmaid named Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) and a dubious acquaintance named Teddy (Joe Pantoliano). The film plays backward in reverse time blocks, placing the audience directly inside Leonard's disoriented perspective.
