In 1964, three civil rights activists vanish on a lonely road in rural Mississippi. Two contrasting FBI agents take the case. Agent Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe) is young, straight-laced, and follows strict rules. Agent Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman) is older, southern, and prefers aggressive, hard-line tactics to crack the town's silence. Facing a racist sheriff, a terrified Black community, and the Ku Klux Klan, the agents must solve the crime before the town tears itself apart.
