1964, when America was at war with itself:
In Jessup County in the US state of Mississippi, three young civil rights activists disappear without a trace. The FBI suspects that the three were murdered by fanatical followers of the Ku Klux Klan, but there is no trace of the bodies. Agents Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe) and Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman) are entrusted with investigating the case, but encounter great resistance from the population, which significantly hampers their investigation. Racism prevails in the rural region, where even the sheriff and his men are members of the Ku Klux Klan. The two FBI agents, who often get in each other's way with their different working methods, have to work together to solve the case...
