Ambitious young window washer J. Pierpont Finch (Robert Morse) stumbles upon a satirical self-help handbook titled "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". Following its advice to the letter, he lands a mailroom job at the World Wide Wicket Company. By subtly manipulating corporate rivals, playing up to the gullible company president (Rudy Vallee), and using underhanded (yet hilarious) office politics, Finch skyrockets from zero to CEO in a matter of weeks, all while romancing a secretary named Rosemary (Michele Lee).
